Chapter Ten

When the polls came out, Richmond had dropped eight spots. Ouch. But with good teamwork, the Ravens could claw their way back to the top.

Except...it didn’t seem to be in the cards. They lost their first game after the Hawaii tournament, a 53-48 nail-biter at home against league foe Virginia Beach University. They plunged down the rankings to number seventeen, and a game against number-seven Virginia loomed on the horizon.

Fun times, fun times.

Andi focused on getting through one day at a time. Whenever cravings hit—and they hit often—she turned to something physical. Basketball, a run, a weight-training session, yoga, a furious game of racquetball with Brandon.

Her attempts to work with Kevin backfired. She told him point-blank, “You shouldn’t tell motivational speeches. I’m sorry, but it’s just not your forte.” She also encouraged him to wear looser clothes and pay less attention to his looks. “It’s unfair, but maybe people will take you more seriously.”

These changes in Kevin threw the players. They liked his dumb quotes and stories and his brilliant good looks, and in a way, Andi did too.

“Thanks for trying to help,” Kevin mumbled after the loss to Virginia Beach. “Not everyone’s meant to be a head coach at a big school. I guess I’m not.” He gave her a look of pity and wandered off.

Great! So now Andi was getting these types of looks from Kevin Key.

As for Melissa...ugh. Just ugh. Andi couldn’t get involved in Melissa’s business. Melissa had to figure things out without Andi’s interference. Maybe the paths she chose would lead her into Andi’s arms.

Although it would be better if they didn’t. In the big picture, Melissa should be with someone who wasn’t an alcoholic. Andi understood this more than ever as her cravings intensified.

For example, the night of the Virginia Beach loss, Andi returned home with trembling hands. She could not sleep. She imagined herself drinking, and it would be like nirvana, damn fucking nirvana on her tongue. Her taste buds would explode. Her body would cry for joy. Her lungs and her mouth would warble songs about bliss.

All would become right in Andi’s world—except she’d blow any remaining positive feelings Melissa had for her, lose her job, cost the Ravens their shot at the national championship and implode Brandon’s trust in her.

Andi’s younger stepbrother, PJ, had been a freckled, buck-toothed boy with a penchant for microwaving. He disfigured or destroyed many of his favorite toys that way. He was sneaky. Always found ways to do it. And who got in trouble? Usually, she did. Andi, the babysitter, did, for not supervising him closely enough.

Kaboom. He exploded these fuckers in the microwave. Just like Andi would explode her life if she took a drink.

At Melissa’s first therapy appointment, she sat across from the counselor in his brown office. She felt like she was in a damn chocolate cake—wood-paneled walls, brown couch, desk and shelves, brown carpet, even brown art.

She giggled out of awkwardness. “You must like chocolate.”

The counselor, a bespectacled man who reminded her of the actor Wallace Shawn, responded with a bemused look.
